Bridlington’s Beloved Chippy Left Gutted by Lunchtime Blaze

The owners of Bridlington’s Naked Fish restaurant have spoken of their heartbreak after a major fire tore through the family‑run business on Queen Street during a busy lunchtime service.

In a statement shared on social media, the team said everyone was evacuated safely thanks to quick thinking and calm action.

“We are incredibly grateful to our staff for staying calm, acting decisively, and protecting customers and colleagues,” they wrote. “We are a family business, and fish and chips have been part of our family for generations. Seeing our shop like this is absolutely devastating.”

Two team members, Merlin and Cameron, bravely re‑entered the shop as smoke filled the building and were later checked over at hospital. Both are recovering well. Residents living in the flats above were also safely evacuated, and the owners expressed deep sympathy to neighbours for the fear and disruption caused.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.44pm on Saturday, 19th September, after reports of a fire involving an extractor fan. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews used four breathing apparatus sets, a hose reel and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the blaze. Three adults suffered smoke inhalation, with two taken to hospital by ambulance. Fire officers reported that the property sustained extensive damage.

Images from the scene show thick smoke billowing from the shopfront and firefighters working inside the charred interior. The owners thanked Humberside Fire and Rescue, the ambulance service, and members of the public for their support and messages of kindness.

“We have faced many challenges, but never a fire,” they said. “Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has reached out to us.”
