Humberside Fire and Rescue Service gas safety advice for Bridlington residents

As colder weather approaches, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is reminding households across Bridlington to take a few simple but vital steps to protect their homes and loved ones from hidden dangers such as gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Annual Gas Safety Checks

Residents who own their homes are urged to book an annual gas safety check with a Gas Safe registered engineer. Regular servicing ensures appliances are working safely and efficiently — reducing the risk of leaks, fires and carbon monoxide build‑up.

But the service warns that staying safe doesn’t end with a yearly check.

Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Threat

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas you cannot see, smell or taste. It is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal or wood do not burn properly. Faulty boilers, wood burners, barbecues and generators can all produce deadly levels of CO.

Warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Unusual tiredness

  • Breathlessness

  • Collapse

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should get fresh air immediately and seek urgent medical help.

Heating Safety Tips for Winter

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is also urging Bridlington residents to follow basic home‑heating precautions:

  • Keep heaters clear of curtains, furniture and anything that could catch fire.

  • Never use petrol or paraffin to start a fire.

  • Avoid drying clothes on or too close to heaters, fires or stoves.

  • Store logs and fuel safely away from heat sources.

  • Use a fire guard to stop sparks escaping.

  • Have chimneys professionally swept before the heating season begins.
