‘Gym in a Box’ Brings Fitness on the Move to Bridlington

Bridlington residents can now borrow gym equipment alongside their favourite books, thanks to a new ‘Gym in a Box’ scheme launched by East Riding Mobile Libraries for National Fitness Day.

Funded by Libraries Connected, the initiative aims to make fitness more accessible for people who may not usually exercise or who struggle to reach local leisure facilities. Each box contains a selection of equipment suitable for home workouts, including a mini exercise bike, resistance bands, dumbbells, yoga mat, Pilates ball and bricks, plus guidance sheets for safe use.

The project ties in with National Fitness Day on Wednesday, 16th September, a UK‑wide campaign run by ukactive that celebrates the benefits of physical activity and encourages healthier lifestyles.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“We’re pleased to bring the ‘Gym in a Box’ scheme to residents in the East Riding. It allows people to borrow gym equipment and explore exercise no matter what their fitness level may be, from a Mobile Library in their area.”

Borrowers will also receive a free one‑week gym pass for any East Riding Leisure centre once their box is returned, helping them continue their fitness journey.

The boxes are available to all East Riding Library members for an eight‑week loan period, giving plenty of time to build new routines and confidence. Equipment can be reserved through the East Riding Libraries website, and will be available from all Mobile Library stops — including those serving Bridlington and surrounding villages.

The East Riding Mobile Library Service visits more than 160 stops each month, bringing books, resources and now fitness opportunities directly into local communities.
