Police across Bridlington and the East Riding are stepping up their crackdown on dangerous driving, illegal e‑scooters and modified e‑bikes — and they’re urging residents to report every incident to help direct patrols and enforcement.
Under new powers in the Crime and Policing Act, officers no longer have to issue a formal warning before confiscating illegal e‑scooters or e‑bikes. The change means riders caught using unlawful machines can have them seized on the spot.
E‑Scooter Laws
Privately owned e‑scooters remain completely illegal to ride on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes or footpaths. They are classed as motor vehicles, meaning they require insurance, a licence and registration — none of which are available for private models.
E‑Bike Limits
Legal e‑bikes must have a motor capped at 250 watts and cannot assist riders beyond 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Any bike modified to go faster or fitted with a throttle is treated as an illegal motorcycle.
Local Crackdowns
Humberside Police have reported spikes in dangerous riding, serious collisions and antisocial behaviour involving modified electric bikes and hidden e‑scooters. Officers have seized dozens of non‑compliant machines — including extreme cases such as riders carrying luggage and children at speed.
Safety officials have also warned about unregulated e‑bike conversion kits, which can cause battery fires if fitted incorrectly.
Reporting Vehicle Nuisance
Humberside Police say the most effective way to tackle the problem is through consistent reporting. Patrols and resources are allocated based on recorded data — so if incidents aren’t logged, they don’t appear in the figures.
Residents are urged to report every case of vehicle nuisance, racing, or antisocial driving, even if it feels repetitive.
