Bridlington Local Community Lift Appeals for New Volunteers Amid Rising Demand

Bridlington Local Community Lift (BLCL) — the volunteer‑run transport service launched earlier this year — is calling for more drivers to help meet growing demand from residents needing lifts to medical appointments across East Yorkshire and beyond.

The service provides door‑to‑door transport for people who would otherwise struggle to reach hospitals in Bridlington, Hull, Malton, Scarborough and York, as well as local clinics and treatment centres.

Since its launch, BLCL has been warmly received by the community, but rising requests mean more volunteer drivers are urgently needed to keep pace.

Geoff, one of the volunteers, joined after reading about the service in Your East Riding Magazine.

“After two years of taking my late wife to hospitals across the region, I know how stressful and costly these journeys can be,” he said. “For people without transport, it’s even harder. Volunteering has been a privilege — the people I meet are friendly, grateful, and often just happy to chat.”

Martin, another volunteer, discovered BLCL through Facebook.

“I have free time after retiring and wanted to help people unable to help themselves,” he explained. “Sometimes we’re the only person they speak to that day. It’s incredibly rewarding to support people who genuinely appreciate the help.”

Passengers regularly praise the service for its kindness and reliability:

Anyone with spare time and a car can volunteer. Full training and support are provided, and all expenses are covered.
