Bridlington is preparing for a spectacular night of celestial activity, with both a deep partial solar eclipse and the annual Perseid meteor shower set to light up the skies this evening.
The solar eclipse begins at 6:12pm, reaching its maximum at 7:08pm, when around 90% of the Sun will be obscured over Bridlington. The event will conclude at 8:02pm, with the Sun sitting low on the western horizon. Ideal viewing spots include Bridlington South Beach, Sewerby Cliffs, and the Spa promenade, all offering clear coastal views.
Once darkness falls, attention turns to the Perseid meteor shower, widely regarded as the most impressive meteor display of the year. The shower will be visible from 10pm onwards, with peak activity expected between 1am and 3am, when observers may see up to 80 meteors per hour streaking across the sky. The best views will be from darker locations such as Sewerby Cliffs, Danes Dyke, and Flamborough Head.
Astronomers are urging eclipse viewers to use certified solar viewing glasses during the early evening event, while meteor watchers are advised to allow their eyes time to adjust to the darkness for the best results.
With clear skies forecast, Bridlington residents are set for an unforgettable night of astronomical wonders.
