HM Coastguard is urging people heading to the coast to take simple safety precautions, as hot weather draws more visitors to beaches and cliff paths across the region.
With temperatures expected to remain high, the Coastguard says a few quick checks before setting off can make a major difference to personal safety.
Visitors are encouraged to check the weather forecast and tide times, especially in areas where tides rise quickly or cut off routes around headlands. People are also being reminded to stay well back from unstable cliff edges and avoid walking directly beneath cliffs, where rockfalls can happen without warning.
For those heading into the water, the Coastguard advises swimming only at lifeguarded beaches, following the guidance of lifeguards and the beach flag system. Entering the sea slowly is essential, as cold water shock can cause sudden gasping and breathing difficulty even on warm days.
Mud is another hazard along parts of the UK coastline. Anyone who becomes stuck should lean back to spread their weight and call for help rather than trying to force their way out.
The Coastguard is also warning against the use of inflatables at the seaside, which can be swept offshore in seconds, and says watersports should be avoided when winds are blowing out to sea.
Visitors are encouraged to tell someone where they’re going and when they expect to return, and to carry a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.
The Coastguard says that if anyone sees someone in difficulty, they should act immediately.
“If you or others are in trouble at the coast, don’t delay. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
