Goods seized by Trading Standards at Strawberry Fields Car Boot Sale
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Trading Standards team has seized a range of counterfeit and unsafe goods during an operation at the Strawberry Fields car boot sale in Bridlington on Thursday, 2nd July.
Officers removed a variety of products that posed potential risks to shoppers, including counterfeit toys, imitation branded items and unsafe children’s products.
At one stall, Trading Standards officers seized several unsafe and counterfeit toys, including Needoh products, Labubu Dolls and Squeezy Dumplings. Some of the Squeezy Dumplings were already subject to a national product recall after being found to contain substances that pose a serious chemical risk to children. These recalled items should not be sold or supplied under any circumstances.
During the same operation, officers also seized a selection of suspected counterfeit goods from a second trader, including imitation high‑end perfumes and fake Apple‑branded products.
The council says the operation highlights growing concerns about unsafe and counterfeit goods being sold at markets and car boot sales, particularly items aimed at children. Trading Standards officers plan to carry out further inspections across the East Riding to identify and remove dangerous products from sale.
Councillor Lyn Healing, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, said:
“Consumers have a right to expect that the products they buy are safe and genuine. Counterfeit and unsafe goods can present significant risks, particularly when they are aimed at children. We will continue to work proactively to identify and remove these products from sale and take appropriate action against those responsible.”
Residents are urged to take care when buying goods from car boot sales, markets and online platforms. Shoppers should be wary of unusually low prices, poor packaging, and items that lack proper safety information.
Anyone with concerns about counterfeit or unsafe products can report them to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133 or through the Citizens Advice website.
