Helicopter Rescues Stranded Clifftop Walker at Thornwick Bay

A dramatic rescue unfolded at Thornwick Bay, Flamborough, early this afternoon after two people were reported stranded high on the cliffs.
Bridlington and Filey Coastguard Rescue Teams were called just after 12.30pm to urgent reports of the pair trapped in a dangerous position. On arrival, crews found one casualty perched on a narrow knife‑edge pinnacle, fully exposed with sheer drops on both sides and no safe way to carry out a rope rescue.
With conditions too hazardous for a cliff operation, a rescue helicopter was requested. The aircraft arrived moments later and carried out a precise low‑level winch. The winchman was carefully lowered onto the precarious ledge, securing the casualty in a rescue strop before lifting them to safety.
The helicopter then landed at a site prepared by coastguard teams, where the casualty was reunited with family members. Despite the dramatic circumstances, they escaped injury — just very cold after the ordeal.
Coastguard teams are reminding people that if you see anyone in difficulty along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
