The jukebox first appeared in Britain in the 1930s, when a few American machines were brought over. They were big, colourful, and felt very modern, so cafés and dance halls loved them. But they were still quite rare.

Everything changed during World War II. Britain couldn’t import jukeboxes anymore, but the demand suddenly shot up because thousands of American soldiers were stationed here, and they were used to having jukeboxes everywhere.

To solve the problem, British bandleader Jack Hylton stepped in. He made a deal to supply jukeboxes for the US troops, so he set up a company called Music Maker. The machines were built in Blackpool, using American parts but British-made cabinets. In fact, the wood for the cabinets came from the packing crates the parts arrived in — proper wartime make‑do.

These early British jukeboxes were called Music Maker MK‑I and later the MK‑II. They were the first jukeboxes ever built in the UK.

After the war, jukeboxes became more and more popular. By the 1950s, they were everywhere — coffee bars, seaside cafés, youth clubs, and pubs. They fitted perfectly with the rise of teenage culture, rock ’n’ roll, and the idea of choosing your own soundtrack for the night.

By the late 1950s, there were thousands of jukeboxes across Britain, and they became a symbol of fun, freedom, and a bit of rebellion. They helped shape the sound of British youth long before streaming, playlists, or even cheap record players!
