Record Visitor Numbers at RSPB Bempton Cliffs After Major Business Support Boost
Sunday 17th May 2026
By Bridlington Gold Radio Editor
RSPB Bempton Cliffs has recorded its highest-ever visitor numbers after receiving targeted business support from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Invest East Yorkshire team.
The award‑winning nature reserve welcomed 135,561 visitors in 2025, an 18% rise on the previous year. Already one of Yorkshire’s most popular wildlife destinations — especially during puffin season — the reserve had been looking to extend its appeal beyond the summer months and boost year‑round footfall.
Through the Invest East Yorkshire business support programme, the RSPB secured a UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) grant from the UK Government. The funding enabled the reserve to run a focused advertising campaign across regional media and social platforms. Staff also accessed free social media workshops and ongoing business advice to strengthen their marketing approach.
Cllr Anne Handley
Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said the results show the wider value of targeted investment.
“It is great to see how Bempton Cliffs has been able to increase its visibility and start to extend its tourism season with the help of new marketing activities. This success shows how targeted funding can generate wider economic impact for an entire local supply chain, with opportunities for accommodation providers, restaurants and other independent businesses to benefit from the increased visitor numbers.”
Reserve Manager Dave O’Hara said the support had transformed their ability to promote the site beyond the peak puffin months.
“Thanks to Invest East Yorkshire, we were able to invest in marketing RSPB Bempton Cliffs as a year‑round visitor attraction, increasing visits in the shoulder seasons and spreading visitor numbers across the year. This contributed to an amazing year for visitor numbers — our highest on record.”
RSPB Bempton Cliffs is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is home to England’s only mainland breeding colony of gannets, alongside its famous puffins. The reserve also features a visitor centre, shop and café serving bird‑friendly coffee, and has expanded its programme of summer events. Last year also marked the tenth anniversary of the visitor centre.
Invest East Yorkshire’s Business Support Services team continues to work with organisations across the region to help them grow, develop and access funding opportunities.

The support for RSPB Bempton Cliffs was delivered through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, funded by the UK Government.
