UK organisations are being urged to strengthen their cyber security as new figures reveal a sharp rise in ransomware attacks, with 323 companies targeted between April 2025 and March 2026. The data, released by Report Fraud, shows that businesses across the country are facing more than 26 ransomware attacks every month, with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) making up over half of all victims.
The warning comes as Report Fraud launches a nationwide campaign today (29 June 2026) to help organisations protect themselves from ransomware — one of the most damaging and fast‑growing cyber threats in the UK. The campaign also stresses the importance of reporting attacks immediately, rather than attempting to negotiate with cyber criminals.
SMEs and Key Sectors Hit Hard
Of the 323 ransomware reports received, 175 came from SMEs, highlighting how smaller organisations remain a prime target for organised cyber crime groups.
Where sectors were identified, several industries showed notable impact:
-
Manufacturing: 42 reports
-
Scientific and Technical Services: 21 reports
-
Education: 19 reports
These figures underline the broad reach of ransomware attacks, affecting everything from production lines to research facilities and schools.
How Ransomware Attacks Work
Ransomware attacks typically begin when cyber criminals exploit a weakness in a company’s network. Once inside, they gain control and plant malicious software designed to lock devices and encrypt data.
When activated, the malware blocks access across the organisation’s systems. Victims then receive an on‑screen ransom demand, often requiring payment in cryptocurrency to unlock their files.
Authorities: ‘Do Not Pay the Ransom’
Report Fraud and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are clear: businesses should never pay ransom demands.
Paying does not guarantee data recovery, and devices may remain infected. It also fuels criminal activity and encourages further attacks.
