Residents across Bridlington are being urged to remain vigilant after Humberside Police Fraud Watch warned that criminals are attempting to exploit a government-backed £100 Household Energy Payment scheme.

The warning comes amid reports of fraudsters sending convincing text messages, emails and making telephone calls claiming households must apply for the payment or update their personal details before receiving the money.

The £100 support payment is intended for households in Council Tax bands A to D. However, police are stressing that eligible residents do not need to apply via a text message, click on links, or provide bank details to unsolicited callers.

Fraudsters are reportedly impersonating official organisations in an effort to obtain personal information or banking details from unsuspecting victims.

Humberside Police Fraud Watch is reminding residents that government departments, including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), will never ask for personal or financial information through unsolicited text messages, emails or cold calls.

Bridlington residents are being encouraged to treat any unexpected communication about the payment with caution, particularly messages creating urgency or claiming there is a deadline to respond.

Anyone wishing to check their Council Tax band should do so through the official GOV.UK website rather than links received in messages.

Warning Signs

Residents should be suspicious of:

  • Texts or emails claiming an application is required to receive the payment.
  • Messages demanding that details are updated before a deadline.
  • Requests for bank account information.
  • Unexpected phone calls claiming to represent a government department.

What To Do If You Have Been Targeted

Anyone who believes they have fallen victim to the scam should:

  • Contact their bank immediately if financial details have been shared or a payment has been made.
  • Call 159 if they do not know their bank's direct fraud number.
  • Report the incident to Humberside Police by calling 101.
  • Forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
  • Forward scam text messages to 7726.

Further information and fraud prevention advice is available through Fraud Watch.
