Local Firework Sales Open: East Riding Council Warns of Curfews as Campaign Urges Care for Pets and PTSD Sufferers

BRIDLINGTON — Local emergency services and East Riding of Yorkshire Council are urging Bridlington residents to stay safe, respect their neighbours, and protect vulnerable individuals as the seasonal firework sales window officially opens across the coast.

With Bonfire Night fast approaching, pop-up retailers and licensed shops across Bridlington and the surrounding villages are now permitted to sell consumer fireworks. However, officials are reminding the public that strict national laws and local noise guidelines remain firmly in place for the 2026 season.

Despite a recently closed government consultation aimed at slashing the maximum volume of fireworks, the current legal noise limit remains capped at 120 decibels. East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Environmental Health Team has confirmed they will be actively monitoring local compliance. Setting off fireworks outside of the permitted 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM curfew hours could land offenders with an on-the-spot fine of up to £90, though the curfew is extended until midnight on 5th November.

"We want everyone to enjoy the festivities, but we must be mindful of our community," a local council representative stated. "Setting off or throwing fireworks in the street or any public place in Bridlington is strictly illegal and will be dealt with by the police."

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is strongly advising families along the East Yorkshire coast to attend organised public events rather than hosting private displays at home, in an effort to reduce accidental injuries and lessen the strain on emergency services. The primary local display will take place on Bonfire Night itself, Thursday 5th November, at the Bridlington Rugby Club on Dukes Park, with gates opening at 5:00 PM and the display starting at 7:30 PM.

Residents who wish to report persistent noise disturbances or illegal firework sales in the Bridlington area can contact the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Environmental Health Team directly on 01482 393939.

Supporting Veterans and PTSD Sufferers This Season

While fireworks are a tradition for many, the unpredictable, explosive bangs can be incredibly challenging for individuals living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). For military veterans, emergency service workers, and survivors of trauma across Bridlington, sudden loud noises can trigger intense distress, hypervigilance, or flashbacks.

Local health advocates are asking the community to show extra consideration:

  • Give Advance Notice: If you plan to set off private fireworks, let your neighbours know a few days in advance so vulnerable residents can prepare, use noise-cancelling headphones, or plan around it.
  • Stick to the Main Dates: Limit private displays strictly to Bonfire Night itself or the immediate weekend, rather than setting them off unexpectedly over consecutive weeks.
  • Consider Low-Noise Options: Look for fireworks specifically labelled "low-noise" or "quiet" at local retailers to enjoy the visuals without the booming concussive sounds.

Bridlington Animal Safety Guide: Protecting Pets and Livestock

With fireworks now on sale, local veterinary practices and animal charities are urging residents to take extra precautions to protect pets, horses, and wildlife from loud noises.

For Domestic Pets (Dogs & Cats)

  • Walk Early: Avoid walking dogs along Bridlington beach or the promenades after dark, as unexpected early-evening fireworks can easily spook them.
  • Secure the House: Ensure all windows, doors, and cat flaps are locked well before dusk to prevent a startled pet from bolting.
  • Create a Safe Haven: Set up a quiet den in an internal room away from windows. Keep the curtains drawn and turn up the TV or radio to help mask sudden thuds and bangs.
  • Update Microchips: Double-check that your pet’s microchip details are up to date in case they manage to escape.

For Small Animals, Horses & Wildlife

  • Bring Hutches Inside: Move rabbits or guinea pigs into a secure garage, shed, or utility room. If they must stay outside, face the hutch toward a wall, cover it with blankets to deaden sound, and provide extra bedding for burrowing.
  • Keep to Stable Routines: Keep horses and livestock in their familiar stables or fields where they feel secure. Altering their routine abruptly can cause more anxiety than the noise itself.
  • Check the Bonfire Pile: If you are building a private bonfire, do not construct it until the day of lighting. Always check the pile thoroughly beforehand to ensure hedgehogs or nesting birds haven't crawled inside for shelter.
