Local Travel Advice Issued Ahead of Dark Nights and Autumn Weather

Sunday 4th October 2026

Car driving along a coastal road near Bridlington during early evening with reduced daylight.

As the UK prepares for the clocks to go back at the end of the month, dark nights will soon be returning, bringing longer periods of reduced visibility for drivers across Bridlington and the surrounding villages.

Although winter weather is not currently forecast, the seasonal shift still brings challenges. Early mornings and evenings will become noticeably darker, making it harder to spot pedestrians, cyclists, parked vehicles and animals — particularly on rural routes around Bempton, Flamborough, Carnaby and the A165.

Damp roads, patches of mist and glare from low autumn sun can also appear with little warning, especially during school‑run and commuter times.

Drivers travelling further across the country are encouraged to check for any localised flood alerts before setting off. Flooding is not expected at the moment, but checking ahead is a simple way to stay prepared and avoid unexpected delays. Flood alerts for England can be viewed on the GOV.UK website.

🚗 Pre‑Journey Checks for Autumn Driving

A quick vehicle check before travelling can make a significant difference:

  • Ensure all lights are working — darker evenings mean you’ll rely on them more

  • Check windscreen wipers and screen wash levels

  • Confirm tyre pressures and tread depth

  • Make sure your number plate is clean and visible

  • Adjust mirrors and clean them if needed

  • Check water and oil levels

It’s also sensible to keep essentials in your car year‑round: torch, warm clothing, blanket, food and drink, first aid kit and jump leads. Keep your licence, insurance and breakdown details close to hand.

If travelling alone, let someone know your destination and expected arrival time.

🌧 Wet Weather & Reduced Visibility

Autumn often brings patchy rain, mist and sudden changes in visibility. Drivers are advised to:

  • Slow down when wipers are needed

  • Use dipped headlights when visibility drops

  • Increase the gap between vehicles to at least four seconds

  • Watch for standing water

  • Stay alert to spray from other vehicles

  • Take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists

  • Never walk or drive through floodwater

  • Respect road‑closed signs

Even without severe weather, darker conditions can make hazards harder to spot — especially on coastal and rural roads.

❄️ Early Winter Preparation (Even Though Snow Isn’t Forecast Yet)

Snow isn’t expected at the moment, but preparing early helps avoid last‑minute stress:

  • Keep de‑icer, a scraper and warm layers in your car

  • Check your battery health

  • Make sure your phone is fully charged before travelling

  • Plan routes with good lighting where possible

  • Be aware that coastal areas can experience sudden temperature drops

These steps help ensure you’re ready if conditions change unexpectedly later in the season.
