False Emergency Call Diverts Coastguard and RNLI Resources in Early‑Morning Incident

Just after 3am this morning (26th September), a major emergency response was launched in Bridlington after personal belongings were found on the promenade close to the Spa, prompting fears that someone may have entered the water.

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team, Filey Coastguard Rescue Team, Bridlington RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and Humberside Police were all tasked to the scene. A shoreline and water search began immediately while police carried out enquiries nearby.

However, after reviewing CCTV footage, it was confirmed that the individual who reported the incident had deliberately placed the items on the promenade before contacting the emergency services. The discovery meant that multiple emergency teams were deployed to what was ultimately a false and unnecessary call.

A spokesperson for Bridlington Coastguard said the incident was deeply concerning:

“We will always respond to any report that someone may be in difficulty. Every call is treated seriously because behind every report could be someone who genuinely needs our help.

However, deliberately creating a false report of an emergency is completely unacceptable. It takes Coastguard, lifeboat and police resources away from where they may be genuinely needed and could potentially delay a response to a real emergency.

We would urge everyone to think carefully before contacting the emergency services and never deliberately make a false report. Our teams are here to help those who genuinely need us, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

Emergency services are reminding the public that if you see someone in danger or believe someone may be in difficulty at the coast, you should always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
