Police Urge Residents to Secure Heating Oil Tanks as Prices Rise

With colder months approaching and heating oil prices climbing, Humberside Police’s Rural Task Force is urging residents across East Yorkshire and the Humber region to check and secure their oil tanks to help prevent theft.

Heating oil theft can occur at any time, and officers are reminding homeowners to take simple steps to protect their property:

• Check your oil tank regularly and monitor fuel levels.

• Lock tank lids, caps and valves securely.

• Install security lighting, alarms or CCTV where possible.

• Keep tanks visible from your property but screened from public view to deter thieves.

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity, vehicles or individuals near oil tanks immediately via 999 if a crime is in progress. When reporting, please state that it is rural crime so the Rural Task Force can be notified for attendance.
