The reminder comes during Chimney Fire Safety Week 2026, which runs from 7th–13th September, highlighting how simple maintenance can prevent serious incidents. National figures show chimney fires remain a seasonal threat, with incidents peaking between January and March as households rely more heavily on open fires and stoves.

Why chimney fires happen

Chimney fires typically start when heat or flames ignite built‑up soot or creosote inside the flue. These deposits are highly flammable and can cause extensive damage if not removed.

Why sweeping is essential

Regular sweeping clears soot, creosote, bird nests and other debris that can restrict airflow or catch fire. It also helps appliances run safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of fumes entering your home.

What Bridlington residents should do

Have your chimney swept regularly by a certified professional
Clear bird nests and overgrown plants around the chimney
Keep chimneys and flues well maintained and inspected
