Damaged metal steps at Selwicks Bay.
People visiting Flamborough are being urged to stop ignoring the closure of the steps down to Selwicks Bay, after reports that some beachgoers have been climbing over the safety barrier to reach the beach.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council confirmed it has received multiple reports of visitors bypassing the fixed barrier and closure signs at the top of the cliffside steps near Flamborough Lighthouse. The metal staircase was closed in June after an inspection found it to be in a seriously damaged condition, with both visible and hidden structural issues caused by heavy footfall and long‑term corrosion.
Engineers installed a fixed barrier and clear signage to prevent access and protect the public. However, the council says some people are still clambering over the barrier to descend the unsafe steps.
Because the staircase is the only access route to Selwicks Bay, the beach itself is temporarily closed. There are also concerns for paddle boarders travelling from nearby North Beach, who may find themselves stranded with no safe way back up the cliff.
Council engineers and contractors are working on a long‑term solution, but the steps are expected to remain closed for some time. The extent of the damage means the structure may need to be completely rebuilt.
Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure, tourism and planning, said the closure was unavoidable:
“We don’t want to restrict access to this beach, but these steps are in a dangerous condition, so we had no choice but to close them. Please don’t ignore the barrier and closure signs, because there is a real risk that someone could get seriously hurt if the steps give way. This won’t be a quick repair — the damage means we may have to rebuild them. We look forward to reopening these steps when they are made safe, but until then please don’t use them.”
