Three Bridlington RNLI volunteers will be trading lifejackets for running shoes this September as they take on one of the UK’s biggest road races — the Great North Run — to raise vital funds for the lifesaving charity.
Volunteer crew members Helen Baxter, Dalton Smith and Natalie Clydesdale will join more than 60,000 runners in Newcastle for the famous 13.1‑mile challenge, marking the event’s 45th anniversary. All three have spent months training in all weathers, clocking up miles along the Yorkshire coast as they prepare for the half marathon.
Every mile they complete will help support the RNLI’s mission of saving lives at sea.
Founded in 1981 by Olympic medallist Brendan Foster, the Great North Run has grown into one of the world’s most iconic running events. From its first year with 12,000 participants, it now attracts tens of thousands of runners of all abilities, from elite athletes to first‑timers taking on a personal challenge. The route takes runners from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields, lined with spectators who create one of the most uplifting atmospheres in UK sport.
Crew Voices
Helen Baxter said:
“I’ve always wanted to take part in the Great North Run, and being able to support the RNLI while doing it makes it even more worthwhile. Running with my crewmates will make it even more special.”
Dalton Smith added:
“It will be a tough challenge, but knowing we’re raising money for the RNLI will keep us motivated. Every contribution really does make a difference.”
Natalie Clydesdale said:
“For anyone who knows me, this will come as a shock — I only ever run if I’m being chased or responding to the pager. But raising funds for the RNLI will make every mile worthwhile.”
