A safety warning has been issued after a drone crashed into the Yorkshire Belle during a coastal cruise on Saturday 8th August, leaving one passenger injured and another suffering a medical emergency.
The incident happened while the historic pleasure cruiser was sailing off Bridlington’s South Bay. According to witnesses, a drone being flown nearby suddenly lost control and struck the vessel, startling passengers and causing minor damage.
Crew members immediately assisted an injured passenger who suffered a cut during the impact. Moments later, a second passenger experienced a medical emergency unrelated to the drone strike but triggered by the shock of the incident.
The Yorkshire Belle’s crew contacted the Coastguard, who provided guidance and ensured the vessel could return safely to harbour where the casualty received further care.
Operators of the Yorkshire Belle are reminding the public that drones should never be flown close to vessels, piers, or busy public areas. They warn that even small drones can cause serious injury or disrupt emergency procedures at sea.
The Coastguard echoed the message, urging drone users to follow the Civil Aviation Authority’s rules and maintain safe distances from people, boats, and coastal infrastructure.
Anyone witnessing unsafe drone activity along the coast is encouraged to report it via 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
