On Sunday 7th July, Bridlington RNLI’s volunteer crew were paged late in the afternoon following reports of a missing child on the beach. The lifeboat was prepared for launch, but before it reached the water, the child was thankfully found safe and well, and the crew were stood down.
With thousands of families visiting Bridlington’s seafront during the summer, RNLI volunteers say it’s surprisingly easy for little ones to become separated in busy crowds — a frightening experience for both children and parents.
To help prevent similar incidents, Bridlington RNLI now has thousands of free ‘Beach Safety Paper Wristbands’ available for families. Parents can write their mobile number on the wristband so lifeguards can quickly reunite children with their families if they become lost.
The wristbands are available from:
-
RNLI Shop next to Bridlington Lifeboat Station
-
RNLI King Street Shop
-
RNLI Lifeguard Pods
-
Ritche’s Café
-
Foreshore Office on South Promenade
RNLI guidance:
-
Pick up a free wristband from any RNLI lifeguard unit
-
Write your mobile number clearly
-
Tell your child to head straight to the lifeguard unit — look for the RNLI flag, or lifeguards in red shorts and yellow tops — if they become separated
Beachgoers are reminded to stay safe, stay aware, and look out for each other as the summer season gets busier.
In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
