View of Selwicks Bay steps descending towards the sea at Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire
Access to one of East Yorkshire’s most scenic beaches has been closed after engineers discovered significant structural damage to the steps leading down the cliff at Selwicks Bay, Flamborough.
The steep route, which connects the cliff‑top near Flamborough Head Lighthouse to the beach below, was sealed off a month ago following concerns about wear and tear caused by the harsh marine environment.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson confirmed the closure remains in place while contractors design and source a durable, bespoke repair solution.
“The steps have been inaccessible for a month now while our contractors engineer and source a durable bespoke solution,” the spokesperson said. “We look forward to reopening the steps once they’ve been fixed.”
The pathway, known for its dramatic views of the chalk cliffs and sea stacks, is a popular route for walkers and photographers visiting Flamborough Head. Until repairs are complete, visitors are being advised to use alternative coastal paths and view points.
