Humberside Police issue domestic abuse safety warning ahead of England’s World Cup quarter‑final match
As excitement builds for England’s World Cup quarter‑final clash with Norway this evening, Humberside Police have issued a clear and urgent message to households across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire: no matter the result, abuse at home is never acceptable.
Officers say that while football brings communities together, their data shows a troubling trend. Across the force area, reports of domestic abuse consistently rise on days when England play — whether the team wins, loses, or draws. The force is urging residents to be aware of this pattern and to look out for friends, neighbours, and loved ones who may be at risk.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said the priority is keeping people safe during what should be a positive and enjoyable evening.
“Everyone wants to get behind England tonight, but we also know match days can be difficult for some households. Domestic abuse is never justified, and we want anyone affected to know that help is available. You are not alone, and you do not have to wait until you are ready to speak to the police.”
The force emphasises that support does not begin and end with law enforcement. Many partner agencies and third‑party organisations across the region can offer confidential advice, emotional support, and practical help. Unless someone is in immediate danger, these organisations will not share information with the police, giving victims space to seek guidance safely and at their own pace.
Police are encouraging anyone experiencing abuse — or anyone concerned about someone else — to reach out.
