Council staff at a compost giveaway.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced the return of its popular free compost giveaways this May, with Bridlington residents once again invited to collect bags of locally recycled compost.

The council’s waste and recycling team will be distributing 5,000 bags across a series of events held throughout the month, including a stop at the Carnaby council depot near Bridlington on Saturday 23rd May at 10am.

Residents can collect two free bags of compost, which will be placed directly into car boots by council staff. Around 60 tonnes of compost is expected to be given away across the programme, all produced from the food and garden waste residents place in their brown bins.

The giveaways follow the council’s rollout of weekly brown bin collections for food waste, which began in February for two‑thirds of East Riding households. Remaining homes will join the scheme next February.

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We’re pleased to bring our compost giveaways back for May as they are always a big hit. East Riding residents have always been brilliant at supporting our recycling schemes, including the recent launch of our weekly food waste collections, and we very much appreciate that.”

Brown bins can be used to recycle all cooked and uncooked food, out‑of‑date items, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, eggshells, teabags and small amounts of sauces and gravies, as well as garden waste such as grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds.

Residents attending the Bridlington event at Carnaby are asked not to queue beforehand, as early queues may cause safety issues and could result in people being turned away.

The compost provided is best used as a soil improver.
