Bridlington and Surrounding Villages Benefit from Major Road Refresh

A surface dressing programme will be carried out on roads in the East Riding this spring and summer.

A programme of road improvements worth £3.5 million will see a wide range of routes in and around Bridlington upgraded this spring and summer as part of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual surface‑dressing works.

The scheme, which begins on Wednesday 22nd April and runs for around 16 weeks, will treat 166 sections of road across the East Riding — including a significant number serving Bridlington and its surrounding villages.

Local routes scheduled for treatment include Quay Road in Bridlington , along with residential streets such as Clarence Road, Cloverley Road, Oakwell Avenue, Ryeland Avenue and Oatland Road . Key connecting roads just outside the town are also included, such as Bempton Lane and Buckton Gate linking Bridlington with Bempton and Buckton .

Further improvements will take place across nearby rural communities, including Newsham Hill Lane in Bempton, Gosling Slack in Grindale, Back Lane and Back Street in Wold Newton, and stretches of the B1249 through Langtoft . Routes to the south and west of Bridlington — including Main Street in Burton Agnes and Lissett Lane on the A165 — are also part of the programme .

Surface dressing is a key part of the council’s planned maintenance work. Around 700,000 square metres of stone chippings will be laid — enough to cover a route from Beverley to Hartlepool — helping to seal road surfaces, reduce the risk of potholes and improve skid resistance.

The process involves applying hot bitumen, spreading chippings and rolling them in, followed by sweeping loose stones and reinstating road markings. Temporary 20mph speed limits will be in place on treated roads to protect drivers and the council’s workforce.

Councillor Paul West, portfolio holder for environment and transport, thanked residents for their patience while the works take place, saying the programme “helps protect these roads from potholes and other damage.”

Residents living on affected streets will receive advance notification, and warning signs will be installed before work begins.

Loose chippings collected after the works will be washed, graded and recycled, saving more than 7,000 tonnes of material and around £60,000 of public money every two years.
