Just before 5pm yesterday (3rd July), a major rescue operation unfolded at North Landing, Flamborough, after reports emerged of two paddleboarders who were potentially cut off by the tide and unable to self‑recover.
Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to the scene alongside colleagues from Filey Coastguard Rescue Team and Flamborough Lifeboat. On arrival, Coastguard crews began searching from the cliff top to locate the casualties and determine the safest rescue method.
Flamborough Lifeboat quickly arrived and located the pair in a small, isolated cove. However, worsening sea conditions meant the lifeboat crew were unable to carry out the rescue safely.
With daylight fading and both casualties becoming increasingly cold and distressed, Coastguard teams deployed specialist rope rescue equipment to the cliff top and began preparing for a cliff rescue. Following updated information from the scene, the Coastguard Officer in Charge requested urgent assistance from a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.
The helicopter arrived swiftly and assessed the situation before lowering its winchman into the cove. Each casualty was secured in a rescue strop and winched safely — one at a time — to the cliff top, where they were met by Coastguard teams.
Both paddleboarders were assessed and found to be safe and well. Although shaken by their ordeal, neither required medical treatment.
