Fan Safety Check at Home.
As temperatures continue to rise across East Yorkshire, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service is reminding residents to stay safe while keeping cool at home.
Many households have bought extra fans in recent days or dug out older ones from cupboards and lofts. While they’re a welcome relief in hot weather, the fire service warns that damaged or poorly used fans can pose a fire risk.
Residents are being urged to carry out a few simple checks before switching them on.
If you’re using an older fan, look for any signs of damage, dust build‑up or worn cables. New fans should always be bought from trusted retailers, and plugs or charging packs must be suitable for UK use.
Where possible, plug fans directly into a wall socket rather than overloading extension leads. Keep cables tidy and away from furniture to avoid damage or trip hazards.
For rechargeable fans, follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions carefully and avoid leaving them charging unattended, overnight or near an exit.
The fire service is also reminding people to make sure smoke alarms are fitted on every level of the home and tested regularly.
Alongside fire safety, residents are encouraged to follow NHS guidance to stay healthy in the heat. This includes keeping out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, staying hydrated, planning physical activity for cooler times of day, and keeping homes cool by closing curtains and windows in sun‑facing rooms.
People are also asked to check in on older relatives, neighbours and anyone who may struggle in hot weather. Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke can help prevent serious illness.
A spokesperson for Humberside Fire & Rescue Service said that “a few small checks can make a big difference in keeping your home and loved ones safe.”
