People staying cool in hot weather with water bottles, shade and sun protection
As temperatures rise across the region, residents are being urged to enjoy the sunshine safely and look out for those who may struggle to keep cool during the hot weather.
Local health teams are reminding people to check in on older relatives, neighbours and anyone with underlying health conditions, particularly those who live alone. Even short periods of extreme heat can be dangerous if simple precautions aren’t taken.
Experts say small actions can make a big difference in preventing heat-related illness. Staying hydrated, avoiding the sun between 11am and 3pm, and keeping homes cool are among the most effective steps.
People are advised to close windows and blinds in rooms facing the sun, then open them again at night or early morning when temperatures drop. Wearing light, loose clothing, a wide‑brimmed hat and sunglasses can also help, along with applying sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with 4 or 5‑star UVA protection.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, avoid excess alcohol and carry water when travelling. Authorities have also issued a strong reminder never to leave anyone — especially infants, young children or animals — in a closed, parked vehicle.
Other practical checks include ensuring medicines are stored correctly, confirming fridges, freezers and fans are working properly, and saving physical activity for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening.
People are also being urged to familiarise themselves with the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. NHS guidance on symptoms and treatment can be found here: https://orlo.uk/Heatstroke_Advice_xkN7p
