As the Bank Holiday weekend brings warm weather and crowds to beaches, parks, festivals and family gatherings across the region, Humberside Police are reminding the public to use the right contact routes when they need support.
The Force Control Room (FCR) is preparing for a surge in calls over the long weekend, with teams working around the clock to prioritise emergencies and keep communities safe.
Head of the Force Control Room, Luke Shaw, said: “Bank holidays are a time for people to relax and enjoy themselves, but our teams are here 24/7 to make sure emergency calls are responded to swiftly and efficiently. All we ask is that people think about whether they need police assistance before calling, so we can focus on those who need us most.”
He added that while some issues — such as lost property — can be upsetting, they are not emergencies. “Someone in danger or a crime in progress requires an urgent 999 response. If you’re unsure whether to call, you can check our guidance online or ask Bobbi, our virtual assistant, who will help direct you to the right option.”
When to Call 999
You should only dial 999 if:
-
Someone’s life is in danger
-
A crime is in progress
-
There is an immediate risk to public safety
Using 999 for non‑urgent matters could delay help for someone in crisis.
If You Call 999 by Accident
Accidental calls happen — but police ask that you stay on the line and explain the mistake. If a call disconnects before speaking to an operator, the FCR must treat it as a potential emergency and spend time calling back to check the caller is safe.
Alternatives to 999
-
101 – For non‑urgent matters or reporting a crime after it has happened
-
Online (police.uk) – For advice or to submit reports without calling
-
Bobbi (virtual assistant) – Available on the police website to guide you to the right service
-
Local authorities – For issues such as noise complaints, stray animals, or other non‑police concerns
If you’re unsure who to contact, Bobbi can help point you in the right direction.
Humberside Police say they are ready for the busy weekend and encourage everyone to enjoy the break safely. “If you need us, we’re here — whether through 999 for emergencies or 101 for non‑urgent matters,” the force said.
