Bridlington’s RNLI volunteers are urging beachgoers to take extra care this summer after a rise in early‑season callouts along the East Yorkshire coast.
The crew, who operate the town’s inshore and all‑weather lifeboats, say they have already responded to several incidents in recent weeks as warmer weather brings more people to the beach.
An RNLI spokesperson said the message this year is simple: “We’d much rather give out advice on the sand than launch the lifeboat.”
The charity is highlighting five key safety points for anyone heading to the coast:
-
Float to Live – if you get into trouble, lean back, spread your arms and legs, and try to stay calm.
-
Inflatables are not for the sea – even light winds can pull them offshore in seconds.
-
Check tide times – especially around Flamborough Head, Thornwick and North Landing where people are regularly cut off.
-
Cold‑water shock – even in June, the sea can trigger gasping, panic and breathing difficulty.
-
Stay within lifeguarded zones where red‑and‑yellow flags are flying.
The Bridlington crew will also be sharing safety advice at several community events and roadshows throughout the summer, giving families the chance to meet volunteers and learn how to stay safe before heading to the water.
The RNLI says prevention is always the goal — but the volunteers remain ready to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Anyone who sees someone in difficulty at the coast should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
