Bridlington Students Urged to Prioritise Fire Safety as University Term Begins

As hundreds of young people from Bridlington prepare to head off to university — or return after the summer break — Humberside Fire & Rescue Service is reminding families that fire safety should be part of every student’s moving‑out checklist.

With many first‑time renters living in shared houses, halls of residence or private flats, firefighters say simple precautions can prevent serious incidents.

Essential fire safety tips for students

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service is urging Bridlington students to:

• Check there are working smoke alarms on every level of the property and test them regularly.

• Learn where fire alarms, escape routes, fire equipment and keys are located.

• Keep fire doors closed and never wedge them open.

• Plan and practise an escape route with housemates — including a backup option.

• Switch off chargers, hair straighteners and other appliances when not in use (except fridge freezers).

• Only charge devices when awake and inside the property, and avoid charging near exits.

• Avoid overloading sockets or extension leads.

• Double‑check the oven, hob and air fryer are switched off after cooking.

• Never cook when tired or under the influence of alcohol.

• Keep the kitchen clean to prevent grease build‑up, which can easily ignite.

Battery safety

Lithium‑ion batteries — found in phones, laptops, e‑cigarettes and scooters — can pose a fire risk if damaged or charged incorrectly. Students are advised to follow manufacturer guidance and never charge batteries unattended or overnight.

Smoke alarms and accommodation rules

The service warns that smoke alarms must never be covered or tampered with, as this is dangerous and could lead to disciplinary or legal action.

Smoking or vaping indoors is banned in most student accommodation. Students should use designated outdoor areas and dispose of cigarettes safely.

For those living in halls

Students staying in university‑managed halls should:

• Report any fire safety concerns immediately.

• Inform staff if they need a personal evacuation plan.

• Follow all safety rules and take fire drills seriously.

For those in private rented homes

Bridlington students renting privately should:

• Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working.

• Keep escape routes clear.

• Check for locked exits or barred windows and plan how to get out in an emergency.

If there are any concerns about fire safety, students should speak to their landlord, letting agent or university accommodation team.
