Fire Service Warns: ‘Don’t Overload Plugs’ After Bridlington Blaze

Fire damage to the upper floor of a Bridlington home following an electrical socket fire.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service is reminding residents to check their sockets and smoke alarms after crews attended a house fire in Bridlington caused by an overloaded electrical socket.

Firefighters arrived to find the upstairs of the property severely damaged, with smoke pouring from the front bedroom. Thankfully, the occupiers managed to escape safely and were treated by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation — but crews say the outcome could have been far worse.

Fire officers are urging everyone to take a few minutes to check plugs, sockets and extension leads for signs of damage or overheating.

“Overloaded sockets, damaged cables and faulty plugs can all increase the risk of a fire starting in your home,” said a spokesperson. “Simple checks can prevent tragedy.”

Avoid plugging too many appliances into one socket or extension lead — it can cause overheating.
Never plug one extension lead or adapter into another.
Check plugs, sockets and extension leads for scorch marks or fraying and replace immediately.
Test smoke alarms regularly and make sure they beep when tested.
Have smoke alarms fitted on every floor of your home.
