Fire crews were called to Matson Road in Bridlington early on Wednesday morning after a front bedroom caught fire, causing significant damage to the top floor of the property.
Humberside Fire & Rescue Service received the call at 7.32am on Wednesday 19th August 2026 (Incident No. 020688), sending firefighters to tackle what was classified as a Primary Fire.
The blaze is believed to have been caused by a multi‑socket located in the corner of the front bedroom. The room was fully damaged by fire, with the entire top floor affected by smoke. Crews also reported slight water damage to the ground floor as they worked to bring the incident under control.
Firefighters used two hose reels, four breathing apparatus, two thermal imaging cameras, and a mainline to extinguish the fire and check for hotspots. No injuries have been reported, and the property was made safe following the incident.
🔒 Fire Safety Advice for Residents
Following the incident, fire officers are reminding residents of key electrical safety measures to help prevent similar fires in the home:
-
Avoid overloading sockets — Overloaded plug sockets are one of the leading causes of electrical fires in UK homes. A single socket should never exceed 13 amps, including anything plugged into an extension lead.
-
Do not use cube adaptors — Old‑style block adaptors concentrate load into one outlet and significantly increase fire risk. Fused extension leads with individual switches are safer.
-
Replace damaged or frayed cables immediately — Wrapping damaged flexes in insulating tape is not a safe repair. Damaged cables can arc and ignite.
-
Watch for warning signs — Warm plugs, buzzing sockets, scorch marks, burning smells, flickering lights or repeated fuse‑board tripping all indicate electrical faults that need urgent attention.
-
Test your RCD monthly — Pressing the test button on your consumer unit ensures the device will cut power quickly in the event of a fault. If it doesn’t trip, call an electrician.
-
Keep cables clear and safe — Never run extension leads under rugs or carpets, where they can overheat unnoticed.
-
Know when to call a qualified electrician — Burning smells, scorch marks, sparking, repeated tripping or water near electrics all require professional assessment.
Fire officers say these simple checks can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires, especially in older properties or homes with high appliance use.
