Humberside Fire and Rescue Service safety reminder about building evacuation procedures

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is calling on businesses, landlords and duty holders to make sure their building evacuation procedures meet the requirements of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022.

The reminder is aimed at anyone who owns, manages or is responsible for a building, and highlights the legal duties placed on the Responsible Person — typically the employer, building owner or person in control of the premises.

Under the regulations, Responsible Persons must ensure accurate evacuation procedures, floor plans and essential building safety information are prepared and readily available to Fire and Rescue Services in the event of an emergency.

The service says evacuation plans should include:

  • Clearly defined evacuation routes

  • Appropriate and visible signage

  • Simple, easy‑to‑understand instructions

  • Up‑to‑date building information for emergency responders

  • Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for anyone needing additional support

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service stresses that Responsible Persons have a legal duty to ensure every occupant can leave the building safely.

The Protection team is encouraging building owners and managers to review their evacuation procedures regularly, especially if there have been changes to the building layout, occupancy or how the premises are used.

Further advice and support is available on the service’s website.
