Humberside Fire and Rescue Service reminding holiday let owners to check fire safety measures.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is urging anyone who rents out a holiday home, Airbnb or short‑term let to review their fire safety arrangements ahead of new national rules coming into force in 2026.
A new national register for holiday lets in England is due to launch next year, and it will include checks on safety standards — including fire safety. The service says now is the ideal time for property owners to make sure they meet their legal duties and keep guests safe.
Anyone renting out a property must ensure appropriate fire safety measures are in place. The guidance you need to follow depends on the size and layout of your accommodation:
-
Small properties (up to 10 guests and two floors): follow the government’s guidance for small paying guest accommodation.
-
Larger or more complex properties: follow the national fire safety guidance for sleeping accommodation.
The fire service warns that guests are often unfamiliar with the building and may not know how to escape in an emergency. To reduce the risk, owners should ensure:
-
Clear escape routes
-
Working smoke alarms
-
Carbon monoxide alarms where required
-
Fire safety information available for guests
-
Regular checks of alarms and safety equipment
Although the new register is not yet in place, Humberside Fire and Rescue says taking action now will help protect guests and reduce the risk of fire.
