Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to take a few minutes to test their smoke alarms, warning that a working alarm on every floor can double the chances of surviving a house fire.

The service is also encouraging people to look out for relatives, friends and neighbours who may struggle to check their alarms themselves.

Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention, said the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

“Quick safety checks during visits to relatives or neighbours can make a real difference,” she said. “Making sure smoke alarms are working is one of the simplest and most effective steps we can take.”

The fire service offers home fire safety advice and is encouraging residents to check whether they qualify for a free Home Fire Safety Visit, which includes tailored guidance and support for those most at risk.

More information on home safety advice is available on the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service website, and residents can also check their eligibility for a free safety visit at: HFSC.
