Humberside Police are urging people in Bridlington to speak with family and friends about the growing threat of “celebrity befriending” and romance fraud, after victims across the region reported being targeted by criminals posing as famous actors and musicians.
Scammers have been impersonating well‑known names including Keanu Reeves, Gary Barlow, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston and Raul Malo, using fake social media accounts to build trust, form online relationships and eventually convince victims to send money or invest in bogus opportunities.
Officers say fraudsters often reply to comments on fan pages or send direct messages claiming they want a private conversation. They use stolen photos and videos to make their profiles look convincing, before gradually creating emotional dependency and isolating victims from friends and family.
Police warn that people experiencing stress, loneliness, bereavement, illness or other difficult life events can be particularly vulnerable to this type of manipulation.
Residents are reminded that genuine relationships never involve secrecy, pressure or repeated financial requests, and that no legitimate celebrity will privately contact fans asking for money.
Key Advice
-
Never send money, gift cards or bank details to someone you have not met in person
-
Be cautious of anyone claiming to be a celebrity messaging you privately
-
Speak openly with loved ones if something feels unusual or pressured
Anyone in Bridlington who believes they have been targeted — especially if money has been lost — should call 101 and report it to Humberside Police.
