Bridlington’s streets were lined with applause this afternoon as the Yorkshire Regiment marched through the town to mark its 20th anniversary and celebrate its long-standing ties with the East Riding.
The parade — part of a county‑wide programme of Freedom events — saw serving soldiers, veterans, standard bearers and a full military band make their way through the town centre, cheered on by residents waving Yorkshire flags and Union Jacks.
Crowds gathered well before the start, with families, former service personnel and holidaymakers filling the pavements to watch the regiment exercise its ceremonial Freedom of the Town, a tradition granted to honour the regiment’s service and connection to local communities.
Colonel‑level representatives thanked Bridlington for its continued support over the past two decades, noting that the town has always turned out in strong numbers whenever the regiment visits.
The march formed part of a wider series of events taking place across Yorkshire this week to celebrate 20 years since the regiment was formed in 2006, bringing together historic county battalions under one banner.
Today’s Bridlington parade featured:
-
A full marching band leading the procession
-
Soldiers from across the regiment’s battalions
-
Veterans and cadets representing the next generation
-
A salute taken at a central point in the town
Residents described the event as “moving”, “proud”, and “a real moment for Bridlington”, with many saying it was the biggest military turnout they had seen in years.
The Yorkshire Regiment will continue its anniversary programme with further parades in other Yorkshire towns throughout the week.
