5.8 million adults in the UK now provide unpaid care for a friend or family member, and as Carers Week 2026 gets underway, Bridlington and The Wolds MP Charlie Dewhirst has paid tribute to the “invaluable” contribution they make to families, communities and the wider care system.
Mr Dewhirst said he wanted to put on record his thanks on behalf of residents across the constituency, recognising the vital role unpaid carers play — often quietly and without formal support.
He highlighted progress made by the previous Government, including increases to Carer’s Allowance and new rights allowing unpaid carers to take leave from work to support older, disabled or seriously ill relatives. However, he warned that many carers still face significant challenges, describing the experience as “often isolating”, and said more must be done to support them.
As part of Carers Week, Mr Dewhirst encouraged local businesses and community groups to get involved in a national campaign led by Carers UK, which promotes small workplace and community changes that can make a meaningful difference to carers’ daily lives.
Further information about the campaign can be found at the Carers Week website.
