The FIFA World Cup kicked off yesterday (Thursday 11 June), with matches taking place across North America — and police in our area say they are fully prepared for what is expected to be a busy few weeks of late‑night celebrations.
With many fixtures scheduled for late evening UK time, pubs and bars in Bridlington, Driffield, Beverley and across East Yorkshire are expected to stay busy well into the night. Humberside Police say they will have extra patrols in place to keep people safe.
Chief Inspector Alasdair Booth said: “Protecting the public remains a priority for my teams, and we want to ensure that, football fan or not, everyone feels safe throughout the tournament.
“Large international tournaments are a great opportunity to come together and we often see crowds from across the country gather to show their support for their favourite teams.
“I hope the World Cup provides great moments for us all, however I would like to remind the public that our policing teams will be out and about as part of daily business, and we will deal robustly with those who seek to spoil the celebrations.”
He added that while officers will support a positive atmosphere, they will not hesitate to take firm action against the small minority who choose to commit crime.
With extended opening hours granted to many venues showing the matches, police are working closely with local councils to ensure pubs and bars can host viewings safely.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the tournament responsibly and look out for one another during what is expected to be a lively few weeks for the region.
