As the UK heads into the winter months and the first named storms of the season, Northern Powergrid says it is fully prepared for the challenging weather expected to affect communities across the region.

The Met Office has issued a warning for strong winds as Storm Boelo moves across parts of the country this weekend. In response, Northern Powergrid has placed additional teams on standby, ready to act quickly should severe weather cause disruption to electricity supplies.

The operator says it is closely monitoring the forecast and has activated its winter readiness plans to ensure customers receive support if outages occur.

Customer Support During Severe Weather

Although the network is built to withstand harsh conditions, strong winds and heavy rain can occasionally impact power lines and equipment. Northern Powergrid is encouraging residents to take simple steps now to prepare in case of a power cut.

If your power goes off, you can report it and track live updates at: www.northernpowergrid.com/power-cuts-map

Customers who need extra support can call 105, which connects directly to the electricity network operator.

Priority Services Membership

Northern Powergrid is reminding customers with disabilities, medical conditions or additional needs to make use of its Priority Services Membership — a free scheme offering tailored support during power cuts.

Priority Services Members receive:

  • Priority updates and direct contact during a power cut

  • A dedicated freephone line: 0800 169 2996 (available 24/7)

  • Practical assistance and welfare checks

  • Extra support if power cannot be restored quickly, including hot meals, transport or overnight accommodation

Prepare for a Power Cut

Northern Powergrid recommends:

  • Keeping your mobile phone fully charged, with a power bank if possible

  • Having a torch, batteries, warm clothing and blankets ready

  • Following weather updates from the Met Office: www.metoffice.gov.uk

  • Ensuring you have a plan for any medical equipment that relies on electricity

  • Reading advice on what to do during a power cut: www.northernpowergrid.com/what-to-do-in-a-power-cut

Customer support vehicles are also ready to visit communities, where safe and possible, to provide practical help.

Residents are encouraged to check on neighbours, friends and family who may be vulnerable during severe weather.
