Bridlington is mourning the loss of Councillor Cyril Marsburg, a man who devoted nearly thirty years of his life to serving the town he loved. Cyril passed away on Monday 20th July 2026, aged 89.
Born on 11 June 1937, Cyril became one of Bridlington’s most recognisable and respected public figures. He served as Mayor of Bridlington on three occasions — 2009–10, 2011–12, and 2017–18 — always bringing warmth, humour and a deep sense of duty to the role.
In 2016, Cyril proudly stepped into the world of film, taking on the role of the Mayor of Walmington‑on‑Sea in the Dad’s Army movie — an experience he cherished and spoke of often.
But Cyril’s dedication to Bridlington went far beyond civic office. He spent countless hours supporting people in drug rehabilitation, offering guidance, compassion, and hope to those trying to rebuild their lives. Many residents credit Cyril with helping them find a brighter future, remembering him as someone who could bring light into even the darkest days.
Away from public life, Cyril adored the companionship of his beloved dog Sally, and treasured time spent with his family. Today, the thoughts of everyone at Bridlington Gold Radio are with Shaun, Jackie, Linda, Nigel, and all of Cyril’s family and friends.
Cyril Marsburg will be remembered for his honesty, his humour, and his unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of Bridlington residents. His fellow councillors and staff describe him simply as someone who was “always himself” — kind, genuine, and endlessly dedicated.
A true servant of Bridlington, and a man who made a difference.
