This is an update to our earlier report regarding a man arrested on Sunday afternoon (19th July 2026) following a shop theft and a disturbance involving a hammer in Bridlington.
Police were first called at around 2.15pm to reports of a theft from a shop on Chapel Street. Shortly afterwards, further calls were made reporting that a man was allegedly threatening members of the public with a hammer, prompting a swift response from officers.
A man matching the description provided by witnesses was located and arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop, possession of a weapon in a public place, and affray. He was taken into custody while enquiries continued.
Humberside Police have now confirmed that Michael Meenaghan, 34, of no fixed abode, has been charged with robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and theft from a shop.
He was remanded into custody and appeared at Hull Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday, 21st July 2026).
Police say their rapid response — supported by detailed information from members of the public — ensured the incident was brought under control quickly and safely.
