Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is reminding households across Bridlington to stay vigilant against the dangers of carbon monoxide – a gas that can kill without warning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when carbon‑based fuels such as gas, oil, wood or coal fail to burn properly. Although these fuels are safe when appliances are correctly installed and maintained, faulty equipment or poor ventilation can lead to a dangerous build‑up of the toxic gas.

CO has no colour, smell or taste, making it impossible to detect without an alarm. Once inhaled, it prevents the blood from carrying oxygen around the body, which can quickly become life‑threatening. Even lower levels, if breathed in over time, can cause long‑term health problems including paralysis and brain damage.

Warning signs to look out for:
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for indicators that an appliance may be producing carbon monoxide, including:
• Yellow or orange flames instead of blue (except on certain decorative or flueless appliances)
• Sooty marks or yellow/brown staining around appliances
• Pilot lights that frequently blow out
• Increased condensation on windows

Anyone experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning should immediately get fresh air, open doors and windows, switch off appliances, leave the property and seek medical help.

How to stay safe at home:
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service advises that any appliance burning gas, oil, wood or coal should be serviced regularly by a qualified professional. Chimneys and flues should also be swept to ensure they are clear and working safely.
Installing a carbon monoxide alarm is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your household. Most alarms can be fitted with just a couple of screws, while some are free‑standing. They should be placed near potential sources of CO and in sleeping areas. If fitting one in the same room as an appliance, The Gas Safety Charity recommends positioning it between one and three metres away, and not too close to windows or vents.

• Encourages all residents to fit a CO alarm in rooms with carbon‑fuel appliances such as gas boilers, gas fires, oil heaters, open fires and wood‑burning stoves
• Raises awareness of CO dangers during Home Fire Safety Visits and through local media
• Works with Winter Warmth partners to help vulnerable people access safe heating
• Supports housing partners in ensuring tenants understand landlords’ responsibilities for annual gas checks

The service does not supply or fit carbon monoxide alarms but strongly urges residents to install one.
