Sewerby Zoo Apprentice Wins Animal Care Apprentice of the Year

Sewerby Hall Zoo apprentice, Megan Welsh, has been named Apprentice of the Year in Animal Care at the Bishop Burton College 2026 Apprenticeship Awards.
The ceremony, held on Thursday 12th February, celebrated apprentices from across the East Riding, recognising their dedication, achievements, and contribution to local workplaces.
Megan, 30, from Hull, began her zoo keeping apprenticeship in October 2023 and quickly became an integral part of the team at Sewerby Zoo. She embraced a wide range of responsibilities from day one, impressing colleagues with her commitment and enthusiasm.
Throughout her apprenticeship, Megan has excelled both academically and practically. Her hard work has now earned her a permanent position at the zoo, allowing her to continue developing her skills while contributing to high standards of animal care and welfare.
Sewerby Hall, Gardens and Zoo champions the value of apprenticeships, particularly in competitive fields such as zoo keeping, where hands‑on experience is vital.
Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said:
“A huge congratulations to Megan and all the apprentices recognised at this year’s awards. Sewerby Hall Zoo prides itself on giving students the foundations they need to pursue their dreams in the animal care industry, and I’m delighted that Megan is now a permanent member of the dedicated team at Sewerby.”
Head zoo keeper John Pickering and assistant head zoo keeper Melissa Tate attended the ceremony to support Megan.
John added: “We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this award. It has been a pleasure to watch Megan grow, and we look forward to seeing what she achieves next as a zoo keeper. Well done, Megan.”
