Rise in AI Romance Scams Prompts Fresh Online Safety Warnings

New research suggests that more than one in four people have either been targeted themselves or know someone who has been approached by an AI‑generated chatbot pretending to be a real person on a dating app or social media platform.
Experts say the rise of convincing AI profiles is making it even easier for scammers to exploit people who are hoping to start a new relationship. They’re urging anyone using online dating—whether for the first time or as a regular user—to take extra care.
Get Safe Online has issued updated guidance, including a set of safe online dating top tips and an accompanying e‑leaflet, to help people spot red flags and protect themselves from fraud.
Alongside the dating advice, the organisation has also launched a new Safe Ticket Buyer Tools page, created by ticketing expert Nick Hawe. The tools allow users to check whether resale tickets for concerts, festivals or sporting events are genuine before they commit to a purchase—an area where scams continue to surge.
In addition, those working or volunteering with children are being signposted to a new Cyber Trauma Certificate Course, developed by child psychotherapist and cyber trauma specialist Dr Cath Knibbs. The course explores how online harms affect young people and offers practical strategies for supporting them.
