Humberside Police are urging residents and businesses across the region – including those in Bridlington – to remain vigilant as international events could lead to an increase in fuel‑related crime.

While no spike in offences has been identified at this stage, officers say global instability, particularly the ongoing situation in the Middle East, can influence oil prices. When this happens, fuel thefts often rise, affecting rural communities, farms, transport operators and homeowners with domestic oil tanks.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said that taking simple precautions now could help prevent residents from becoming victims should offenders begin targeting the area.

Five key steps to reduce the risk of fuel theft

• Check your storage tank regularly
Monitoring fuel levels helps you spot any unexpected drop. Electronic alert systems are also available and can notify you immediately if fuel levels suddenly fall.
• Install a tank lock or anti‑siphoning device
These devices make it significantly harder for thieves to access and siphon fuel.
• Keep tanks visible and well‑lit
Tanks hidden away or in poorly lit areas are more attractive to offenders. Good visibility acts as a deterrent.
• Use security lighting and CCTV
Motion‑activated lighting, CCTV systems and clear signage can discourage thieves and help detect suspicious activity.
• Look out for your neighbours
Report anything unusual around nearby homes, farms, businesses or streets. Call 101 to report suspicious behaviour, or 999 if a crime is in progress. Detailed descriptions of people or vehicles are especially helpful.

Officers are also asking HGV drivers to take extra care when parking overnight. Fuel tanks on lorries have been targeted in the past, particularly in lay‑bys. Drivers are advised to use secure yards or designated HGV parking areas covered by CCTV wherever possible.
