Brown bins across the East Riding will move to weekly collections from next month, as the council begins rolling out a major change to how food waste is collected.

The shift comes in response to a new Government requirement for all councils to collect household food waste every week. The rollout is fully funded by the Government and will reach every home in the East Riding by 2027.

At the moment, brown bins – which take both food and garden waste – are emptied every two weeks. That will change from Monday 9 February, when weekly collections begin for Bridlington.

To support the new service, the council has created more than 50 new roles for bin crews and is purchasing 16 additional bin lorries, all funded by the Government.

The waste and recycling team is encouraging residents to make full use of their brown bins and kitchen caddies, especially for food waste. Even though bins may be emptier during the winter, weekly collections are required under the Government’s Simpler Recycling initiative, which aims to increase recycling rates and cut down on waste going to disposal.

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport, thanked residents for their support, saying he is confident East Riding households – already among the best recyclers in the country – will embrace the new system.

Bin Collection Days Changing for Everyone

When weekly brown bin rounds begin, all households will see changes to their collection days for brown, blue and green bins. Blue and green bins will remain on a fortnightly schedule.

A recycling information pack, including a 2026/27 collection calendar, will be posted to every home in the coming weeks.

Residents can also check their new dates using the East Riding of Yorkshire Council app. More than 99,000 people already use the app for automatic bin‑day reminders, which will update to reflect the new schedule.

What You Can Put in Your Brown Bin

Brown bins can take:

- All cooked and uncooked food

- Out‑of‑date items

- Peelings and plate scrapings

- Bones and meat

- Eggshells and teabags

- Small amounts of sauces and gravies

- All garden waste

Everything collected is recycled locally into compost, some of which is given away to residents at annual community events.

Free Starter Packs and Caddy Bags

Residents who don’t yet have a kitchen caddy can request a free starter pack, which includes a caddy and two rolls of liners delivered to their home.

Free caddy bags are also available from household waste recycling sites, customer service centres, leisure centres and libraries.
