Festive Season Sees Rise in Domestic Abuse: Police Issue Urgent Support Message

Wednesday 24th December 2025

By Bridlington Gold Radio Editor

Christmas is a time of celebration for many, but for some it can be one of the hardest periods of the year. Police say incidents of domestic abuse often rise over the festive season, and they are urging anyone affected to seek help.

Increases in alcohol use, financial pressures and contact with former partners can all contribute to emotional or physical abuse within homes. Officers say many families are impacted each year, including children and young people.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background, religion or sexual orientation. Police continue to work closely with specialist organisations and charities to help victims find a safe way forward.

Teams within the force, including the Domestic Abuse Safeguarding Investigation Team (DASIT) and Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) units, remain focused on safeguarding those most at risk. They work alongside partner agencies to offer advice, safety planning and practical support.

Officers are also highlighting the support available for victims of harassment and stalking, including cyberstalking, which involves persistent and unwanted attention online or in person. These offences can cause significant emotional, psychological and physical harm to victims and their families.

Police stress that anyone affected can speak to trained staff in confidence, whether by phone or by visiting a station.

Detective Superintendent April Cook, the force lead for Domestic Abuse, said:
“Protecting vulnerable people sits at the heart of our work, and that does not change during the festive season. For some, Christmas can be the most feared time of the year. Additional pressures can fuel abusive relationships, and we want anyone affected to know that help is available. We will do everything we can to support those who may be suffering.”

She added that domestic abuse can take many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, financial, coercive control, digital abuse or honour‑based abuse such as forced marriage or FGM.
Stalking and harassment, including cyberstalking, also remain a priority for the force.

“We take all incidents extremely seriously,” she said. “If you believe you have been a victim or witness of domestic abuse in any form, please contact us. Call 101, or 999 in an emergency.”
